CHEON WON, established in 1961 with the mission of compiling and publishing the words and teachings of the True Parents, Sun Myung Moon and Hak Ja Han, now has a history of more than a half century, and is the official publishing house for the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification. The company began its work with the publication of Explanation of the Divine Principle and and Exposition of the Divine Principle. Following that we have published and distributed more than 600 volumes of The Sermons of the Reverend Sun Myung Moon, thematic selections of True Parents’ words, special publications to commemorate important events and the three volumes of Cheon Il Guk Scriptures, as well as compiling other volumes covering the words, achievements and teachings of the True Parents.

Our official company history began on February 11, 1961, when Sung Hwa Publishing was registered with the Cultural Communication Ministry, receiving registration number No. 286. We were located in Cheongpa-dong, Yongsan-gu, Seoul, near the Unification Church’s Cheongpa-dong headquarters church. Our publishing history started on February 15, with the publication of the 2nd edition of Explanation of the Divine Principle, which was followed by an updated version, Exposition of the Divine Principle, released on May 1, 1965. On May 13, 1975, when Seoul updated their registration system, our registration number changed to No. 9-23, and soon after, the company relocated from 71-3 Cheongpa-dong 1-ga to 170 Cheongpa-dong 1-ga.

We were assigned an updated registration number again on August 1, 1983 , No. Ga Che 3-98, and on December 30, 1985, the management and editorial offices moved to 1308-10 Nakwon Building in Nakwon-dong, Chongro-gu, Nakwon-dong.  After ten years there, we moved back to Cheongpa-dong in March 1993, to 172-1 Cheongpa-dong 1-ga. On October 28, 1999, our registered name was officially changed to Sung Hwa Publishing Co., Ltd., as our work expanded to compile and edit publications for the numerous providential organizations and companies associated with the Unification Church. We moved to our current offices on June 4, 2004 following the completion of construction of the six-story Sung Hwa Building at Cheongpa-dong 176-6 (now #3, Cheongpa-dong 63-gil under Korea’s new street-number address system), with our Cheongpa Book Store occupying the ground floor, and the management and editorial offices on the 5^th and 6^th floors.

◆ Landmark Projects

Compilation of The Sermons of the Reverend Sun Myung Moon

CHEON WON is in the process of compiling and publishing all the sermons and speeches given as spiritual nourishment for all the people of the world by True Father, under the title The Sermons of the Reverend Sun Myung Moon (hereafter called “Sermons”). Referring to the teachings contained in the Sermons, True Father clearly stressed, “These are not the words of Rev. Moon, but the words of Heaven.” (Sermons, vol. 593, p. 24) And indeed, they are the revelatory messages, God’s words, that have been sent from the heart of the course of providential history. Thus, they can be described as the textbooks and the guiding light that can lead people toward heaven’s holy providence.

After publishing primarily single volume titles for the first 20 years of the company’s history, on October 14, 1982 Sung Hwa published Vol. 2 of the Sermons (sermons from January 6, 1957 to August 4, 1957). This was followed by Vol. 1 (April 8, 1956 to December 30, 1956), released on June 21, 1984. Around this time the Committee for the Compilation of the words of Sun Myung Moon was formed and publication of the Sermons accelerated. The editorial staff at Sung Hwa Publishing recognized the value and historical importance of this sermon collection and put considerable effort into checking the texts of all of True Father’s speeches, going through each one at least three times, comparing them to the audio and video recordings to eliminate errors, and reading and re-reading them to correct any typos or misspellings. The work has continued for more than thirty years, following the consistent procedure for preparing the texts for publication that was established at the beginning of the project, with a total of 615 volumes of Sermons published to date.

◆ Providential History Calls for New Publications

The publication of the Sermons provided a new root and anchor for publications in the Unification movement. A Department for Researching Father’s Words was added on March 1, 1984, and they began the process of compiling data from searches through the Sermons for key words and concepts, which facilitated the publication of various compilations of texts and speeches centered on designated themes, such as God and Humankind, All Things and True Ownership, The Blessing and Blessed Families, and other books for use in Hoondokhae (reading and study) gatherings. In addition to new editions of The Exposition of the Divine Principle, we have also published more than 2000 other books on a rich variety of topics.

Following True Father’s Seonghwa, under the supervision of True Mother, Sung Hwa Publishing produced the Cheon Il Guk Scriptures, Cheon Seong Gyeong, Pyeong Hwa Gyeong and Chambumo Gyeong. The first volume, Cheon Seong Gyeong, contains texts from True Father’s sermons organized around key central themes of his teachings. Pyeong Hwa Gyeong contains texts chosen from among more than 340 public speeches delivered by True Parents in world speaking tours, as they sought to tear down the national, religious, cultural, ideological and other barriers and allow the world to become “One Family Under God,” and other sermons and speeches. The speeches selected illustrate True Parents’ philosophy of peace and their teaching and example of sacrificial life. The final volume, Chambumo Gyeong, shows the life and accomplishments of True Parents, through their path of service and dedication to rescue God’s beloved children from this fallen world and liberate His suffering heart by creating the kingdom of heaven on earth.

In addition CHEON WON has published a variety of commemorative books related to important milestones in True Parents’ providential work, including pictorial histories of the work in different regions, collections of papers presented at key conferences, and other event-related books.  These include series of commemorative books created and published for True Father’s 70^th, 80^th and 90^th birthdays and True Mother’s 60^th and 70^th birthdays, highlighting and enhancing the meaning of these historical days.

◆ The Future of CHEON WON

The truly enormous body of sermons and teachings that True Parents have given is a precious gift, with its capacity to inspire and influence humanity, is spiritual nourishment that can lead people toward spiritual salvation and eternal life.

True Parents have established the tradition of Hoondokhae reading and study, so that by reading and experiencing True Parents’ words, all of our Unification movement members can gain the spiritual understanding to live in harmony with heavenly traditions. It is our mission to give you access to those words, and it is our sincere hope that through them you can find the key to eternal life and happiness.

We have been striving to meet the providential demand for collections of True Father’s words that can be used effectively to reach anybody easily and quickly with the words of real truth for which all peoples’ souls are thirsting. In the future, we will continue to publish compilations of True Father’s words, constantly seeking for new paradigms to suit the continuous challenges that arise in our constantly changing world.
